Triangle Move to Amend is a local affiliate of the national Move to Amend for the Triangle region of North Carolina. Move to Amend supports an amendment to the United States Constitution declaring that corporations are not people and money is not speech.
On January 21, 2010, with its ruling in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that corporations are persons and that campaign donations are the same as free speech with regard to elections. This decision rolled back years of campaign finance reforms and has resulted in a flood of money that is making it easier than ever for corporations to buy elections and run our government.
Move to Amend rejects the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Citizens United, and proposes this amendment to firmly establish that money is not speech, and that human beings, not corporations, are persons entitled to constitutional rights.
We began with six people from Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill on November 9, 2011.
Our primary project is to get Triangle municipalities to pass resolutions in support of a constitutional amendment. Click here for more information on the local resolutions.
We are also doing educational outreach and we participated in the January 20, 2012 “Occupy the Courts” action commemorating the second anniversary of the Citizens United ruling.
